CNN  —  A group called Ultima Generazione or Last Generation have poured what they described as a charcoal-based black liquid into the water of the Barcaccia fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps in central Rome. The group posted a video on Twitter, showing three men and a woman inside the fountain opening paper bags of a black powder. “It is absurd that this gesture should shock you, when we are experiencing a drought emergency that is putting agriculture, energy production in crisis,” the group said in the tweet. The group was stopped by Carabinieri officials and Rome Capital police on Saturday, a police spokesperson said. They are in custody pending charges of defacing a public monument and entering a fountain. The water remained black with visible stains to the marble fountain on Saturday afternoon. Rome CNN  —  Italians who use English and other foreign words in official communications could face fines of up to €100,000 ($108,705) under new legislation introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party. Fabio Rampelli, a member of the lower chamber of deputies, introduced the legislation, which is supported by the prime minister. While the legislation encompasses all foreign languages, it is particularly geared at “Anglomania” or use of English words, which the draft states “demeans and mortifies” the Italian language, adding that it is even worse because the UK is no longer part of the EU. The bill, which has yet to go up for parliamentary debate, requires anyone who holds an office in public administration to have “written and oral knowledge and mastery of the Italian language.” It also prohibits use of English in official documentation, including “acronyms and names” of job roles in companies operating…

CNN  —  At least 22 people died in the devastating storms and violent tornadoes that leveled entire communities in the South and Midwest Friday and Saturday and state leaders in the region have declared emergencies to respond to the damage. Among the victims were four people who were killed in structural collapses in Illinois. Three of the fatalities followed the collapse of a residential structure in Crawford County, said Illinois Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Kevin Sur, while the fourth person died after the roof collapsed at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere. More than 50 preliminary tornado reports were recorded Friday in at least seven states, including in Arkansas, where storms killed five people – four in the small city of Wynne and another person in North Little Rock, local officials said.
