‘Divisive hearings distracted from racism issue’

The hearing was closure for me - RafiqPerhaps there is now the opportunity to tackle the issue at hand.Eighteen months after Azeem Rafiq told MPs that English cricket is "institutionally racist", a verdict on charges brought about in relation to Rafiq's experiences at Yorkshire has been delivered. For various reasons, not least the lengthy period of time taken to get to this point, the Cricket Disciplinary Commission hearing effectively became the public trial of English cricket's racism issue. In reality, it descended into a circus of claim and counter-claim, non-cooperation and questions over the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) simultaneous role as regulator and investigator. That is not to say a disciplinary process is not without merit. Victims and alleged victims should be given the opportunity at justice, the accused a chance to defend themselves, wrongdoing punished. But, in this instance, the protracted battle has only deepened division. Social media bile, newspapers, websites…

Here’s how many times you need to reuse your reusable grocery bags

CNN  —  The battle against the single-use plastic bag may not be won but it’s definitely under way. Restrictions on their use are in place in almost a dozen US states and in many other countries around the world. And in many cases, these efforts have been successful at eliminating new sales of thin, wispy plastic bags that float up into trees, clog waterways, leech microplastics into soil and water and harm marine life. (Of course, these restrictions don’t address the plastic bags already out there that will take centuries to decompose.) But this environmental success story of sorts masks another problem. Many of us are drowning in reusable bags — cloth totes or thicker, more durable plastic bags…

Partisan rancor in Oregon spills over into Idaho effort to absorb...

John Day, Oregon CNN  —  Matt McCaw cringes if you say the word “secessionist” around him. A native of eastern Oregon, McCaw is a mild-mannered, former high school math teacher who fosters children to help his community. “We don’t think of ourselves as a secessionist movement. We see ourselves as a self-determination movement,” McCaw said of the Greater Idaho Movement, which seeks to move the Idaho state line west to include more than half of Oregon. What would have previously been brushed off as a fringe proposition to add the predominantly Republican region of eastern Oregon into conservative Idaho has lunged forward in the Idaho state legislature. There have been plenty of other attempts across the country to break off pieces of states to try to join more politically analogous ones, but this one has advanced the furthest. The measure passed the state House last month and advanced to the…

Missing Dallas teen found locked in a shed was abducted and...

CNN  —  A 13-year-old girl reported missing in Dallas was found locked in a shed more than 1,000 miles away in North Carolina after she was abducted and raped by a man she met on a social media platform, authorities said. The girl was found in Lexington, about an hour’s drive northeast of Charlotte, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The sheriff’s office said it was contacted about the case Friday evening by a special agent with the FBI in Texas. The FBI, working with Dallas police, determined an adult man had been chatting with the girl online, the sheriff’s office said. “The content of the chat was consistent with grooming and enticement,” the release said. Cameras near the teen’s home captured a vehicle registered to a man living in Davidson County and the sheriff’s office, along with agents from the FBI field office in Greensboro,…
