Australia loves its kangaroos so much it sets annual quotas to...

Brisbane, Australia CNN  —  Kangaroos are on Australia’s coat of arms and the tail of the national airline, but every year state authorities allow licensed hunters to kill millions of them. The government and wildlife experts say some species of kangaroos are so plentiful they need to be regularly culled to protect the land, other native species, and the animals themselves from starving during times of drought. But the legal culling of anational icon has enraged some activists, who for years have campaigned for an end to a practice they say is cruel and driven by commercial interests. CNN  —  At least 26 people were killed and dozens injured after powerful storms and at least one tornado pummeled the Southeast on Friday night, ripping roofs off homes, nearly leveling some neighborhoods and knocking out power for thousands, officials said. President Joe Biden spoke with officials after the deadly tornadoes and said he is “praying for those who have lost loved ones in the devastating tornadoes in Mississippi and for those whose loved ones are missing.” Biden also pledged to “focus our federal support where it is needed most quickly,” in the statement. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has issued a State of Emergency in all counties affected by the severe storms, according to a release. “I’m devastated by the destruction and loss of life that these storms have caused,” Reeves said. He promised the state of Mississippi would do everything to send resources to those in need and help…

Russia plans to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Putin says

0
CNN  —  Russia plans to station tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus, President Vladimir Putin said Saturday. Moscow will complete the construction of a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus by the beginning of July, Putin told state broadcaster Russia 1. He said Moscow had already transferred an Iskander short-range missile system, a device which can be fitted with nuclear or conventional warheads, to Belarus. During the interview, Putin said Russia had helped Belarus convert 10 aircraft to make them capable of carrying tactical nuclear warheads and would start training pilots to fly the re-configured planes early next month. Belarus, which is west of Russia on Ukraine’s long northern border, is among Moscow’s closest allies. It helped Russia launch its initial invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, allowing the Kremlin’s troops to enter the country from the north. There have been fears throughout the conflict that Belarus…

Torture, forced abortions and insects for food: Life inside North Korean...

0
Seoul, South Korea CNN  —  Extrajudicial executions, rape, forced abortions, jail without trial, torture, starvation rations that leave prisoners so hungry some turn to eating insects. These are just some of the abuses commonplace in North Korean prisons and other detention facilities, according to former detainees whose testimony forms the basis of a new report released by a human rights watchdog this week. Using interviews with hundreds of survivors, witnesses and perpetrators of abuse who have fled the country, along with official documents, satellite images, architectural analysis and digital modeling of penal facilities, the non-profit NGO Korea Future has built up what it says is the most detailed picture yet of life inside the secretive country’s penal system. “The purpose of our report is basically to reveal the human rights violations that have taken place within North Korea’s penal systems. (It) finds that even 10 years after the UN established…

How Kane broke the England goals record

0
Kane missed a penalty in the World Cup quarter-final loss to France in December but made no mistake from the spot in Italy three months laterThe calm demeanour, the sharp exhale, the run up and clinical finish. It was the same old penalty routine from Harry Kane, only this time it took him to a place no England player has gone before. By netting from the spot against Italy on Thursday night, Kane fired himself into the record books, scoring his 54th international goal to surpass Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading goalscorer.Remarkably, Kane has reached the tally in 39 fewer games than it took Rooney, and the 29-year-old's England career includes an ominous strike 79 seconds into his debut, a World Cup Golden Boot and more than a goal a game in major tournament qualifiers. Here is when, where and how the Tottenham striker became England's top marksman.A goal every…
